Questions to Ask a Neurodivergent Therapist
When reaching out to a potential therapist, it’s completely appropriate—and encouraged—to ask questions. This helps you
determine whether their approach aligns with your needs.
Here are some key questions to consider:
1. What experience do you have working with neurodivergent individuals?
This helps you understand whether the therapist has relevant knowledge and practical experience. You’re looking for more than
just familiarity—you want genuine understanding.
2. How do you adapt your therapy approach for neurodivergent clients?
Therapy should not be one-size-fits-all. A good therapist will explain how they tailor sessions, whether through pacing,
communication style, or specific strategies.
3. What is your perspective on neurodivergence?
Listen carefully to how they frame their answer. Do they view neurodivergence as something to "fix,” or as a difference to
understand and support? The latter is typically more aligned with affirming care.
4. Can sessions be structured in a way that works for me?
This could include:
- Clear agendas or session outlines
- Flexibility with communication (verbal, written, etc.)
- Adjustments for sensory sensitivities
A supportive therapist will be open to making sessions more accessible.
5. How do you support challenges like executive functioning, sensory overwhelm, or social stress?
This question helps you gauge whether they understand common neurodivergent experiences and can provide practical, relevant
strategies.
6. What does progress look like in your approach?
Progress should be defined collaboratively—not imposed. A good therapist will focus on goals that matter to you, not just
standardized outcomes.
